Realistic (R): The Doers

Realistic is the first letter of RIASEC, and for many people it's the easiest type to recognise. Realistic types learn by doing. They would rather build the model than read about it, and they get real satisfaction from seeing something work because they made or fixed it.

What Realistic types enjoy

• Building, assembling or repairing things
• Using tools, equipment and machines
• Working outdoors, or with plants and animals
• Sports and physically active work
• Solving practical problems with a clear, visible result
• Following a project from plan to finished product

Strengths you might notice

• They often have good mechanical and spatial sense: they can picture how parts fit together.
• They tend to be practical and down to earth, and they prefer action to long discussion.
• They often stay calm and focused when something goes wrong and needs fixing.
• Many enjoy precision and take pride in work that is solid and well made.

Work settings that suit them

Realistic types tend to do well where the work is concrete and the results are easy to see: workshops, labs, construction sites, factories, farms, the outdoors, or anywhere technology is designed, installed and maintained. They usually prefer clear goals and hands-on tasks to roles built mainly around meetings or paperwork.

How Realistic combines with other types

On Holland's hexagon, Realistic sits between Investigative and Conventional. A Realistic-Investigative person often enjoys technical and scientific work, where hands-on skill meets problem-solving. A Realistic-Conventional person often enjoys work that is practical and precise, with clear standards and procedures.

Realistic sits opposite Social, so someone whose code mixes the two might look for hands-on work that also involves people, such as coaching, training or outdoor instruction.
